Vale Miss Handley – the end of an era

Mrs Janet Stewart | stewartj@mbc.qld.edu.au

Last week, Moreton Bay College remembered and farewelled Miss Oriel Handley at a very special Thanksgiving service led by the Rev. Peter Lockhart. Hundreds attended in person – and online – to acknowledge and give thanks for the dedication of Miss Handley to this community. Members of her Scared Choir performed many of her favourite hymns, and Vocal Point performed several pieces including the College Song – sung to the original tune - which brought tears to the eyes of many an ‘Old Girl’ present. Mr Ken Waller commanded the audience with a powerful eulogy of Miss Handley’s life, detailing their professional and personal relationship, and Don Hann, a previous Chaplain, also offered insights on Miss Handley’s time at MBC.

I was also privileged to share some very special memories of Miss Handley’s years of service to MBC. While I knew Miss Handley and our relationship began in 1997 when I commenced as an English teacher, I was deeply grateful to the committed work of our previous archivist Heather Hamilton and more recently the work of Lisa Crick, for the archival material I was able to access. This allowed me to recount details of Miss Handley’s life from its earliest connections with the College and the Greene sisters. I have attached my speech here.

Miss Handley was our last tangible connection to the Greenes and their pioneering vision for the holistic education of young women. As we honoured Miss Handley, we honoured her enduring commitment to the ideals of the Greenes, ideals which continue to motivate and inspire us today, 120 years later.

Miss Handley’s example of service, hard work and passion for the education of young women leaves an immeasurable legacy for all members of the MBC family.

COLLEGE CHAPLAINS

Prayer Vigil in response to those impacted by grief and loss during the pandemic.

Reverend Peter Lockhart | lockhartp@mbc.qld.edu.au

It has been well over a year now since the coronavirus pandemic began to impact our world.  While in Australia we have not had the levels of infections and deaths seen in other countries, many have been impacted economically and mentally. We also know that around, Australia border closures and restrictions have interrupted our own ability to gather and mourn at the death of a loved one.

In recent months, second and third waves of infections have impacted countries including India and Brazil, with terrible losses. There appears to be no continent that has remained untouched. Our hearts break at this tragedy that has impacted so many people. As a Moreton Bay College community, we recognise that we have many families with personal and business connections internationally.

In response to this global situation, we have decided to have a time of prayer and reflection between 4.00pm and 6.00pm on Wednesday 26 May. This will be an open ended, multi-faith time.

The Centenary Chapel will be open to come and sit, to light a candle, to write a reflection or prayer, or simply write down the name of someone you know who has been impacted. You are welcome to come for just a few minutes or for as long as the Chapel remains open.

Rev Peter will be available for conversation, care, and prayer but there will not be a formal process.  If you are unable to come, but would like to express a message of support, feel free to email Rev Peter or Chaplain Cherie who can share your thoughts and concerns in an appropriate manner.

HEAD OF PRIMARY

Let’s Celebrate being Under 8

Mrs Rebecca Lennon | lennonr@mbc.qld.edu.au

This week, we have the opportunity to celebrate the joys of being under eight years of age. This Under Eights Week theme recognises that learning is not confined to the boundaries of the classroom walls. The theme for Under Eights week in 2021 is “Children Celebrating Outdoor Play and Learning”. The events at MBC this week have been planned to highlight the joy of outdoor play and the rich diversity of our individual creativity and imagination. By focusing on this special group of people, it provides an opportunity to enhance the community’s awareness of the rich and competent contribution young children make to our community. Providing every opportunity for young children to experience and comprehend the world around them contributes to future proofing our society.

Many of us, whether as a parent, educator or both, worry about the influence of screen time that our young children are exposed to. We know from current research brains are ‘rewiring’ depending on the amount of visual stimulus in the early years. In response to this, there has been a recent shift to place a greater emphasis on the importance of extended time for children to explore and connect with nature.

Creativity and imagination are fostered when using materials that are open ended and not designed for a specific purpose within play. Responsibility develops when entrusting a child to take care of the living parts of their environment. Nature activates the senses—you can see, hear, smell, and touch outdoor environments. It gets children moving. Nature creates a unique sense of wonder for kids that no other environment can provide.

Did You Know?

  • Neuroscience has proven that the early years, up to the age of six, have the most influence on brain development and subsequent learning, behaviour and health than any other time in the life cycle
  • By age three, a child's brain is twice as active as an adult's brain
  • There is evidence that the stresses we are exposed to early in life can affect our ability to deal with stressors later in life
  • Language experiences through play, song, rhyme and discussion are crucial for confidence and success with learning later in life

Does your under eight year old ask lots of questions?

If the answer is yes… celebrate it! If not…we need to develop it.

We need to embrace the learning and development that takes place in the early years. We constantly underestimate the power of a young child’s thinking. We are always working at MBC to develop questioning and higher order thinking skills. Children are born curious. We need to ensure as they grow older, we don’t ‘train them out of ‘asking good questions. Many believe that the road to innovation is paved with great questions. A good question can’t be answered on the first few moments or as a result of a Google search. A great question fosters wonder, curiosity, inquiry and challenge. We look forward to an enjoyable morning on Friday 21, with the girls, parents and teachers as we explore the many activities planned. A special thank you to Mrs McBurnie for her coordination and planning, and to our teachers for planning activities.

Mother’s Day

We trust that all Mums, Grandmothers and special female carers had an enjoyable Mother’s Day and were taken care of throughout the day by those around you. Sincere thanks to our very dedicated parents who gave up so much time to gather and wrap gifts and support the students on the day. Particular thanks to Mrs Amanda Kitchen for coordination of the Mother’s Day stall. We are extremely grateful as the students find purchasing and selecting a gift, a very special treat. We also acknowledge and pray for those who find this day very challenging due to personal circumstances.

HEAD OF SECONDARY

Encouraging our students to develop their resilience muscle.

Mrs Kay Gleeson | gleesonk@mbc.qld.edu.au

All of us have faced moments where things have not gone to plan, things have been hard or challenging and have come from left field causing us to question our purpose, motivation, and ability. For some responding to these events from the outside seems easy and we are left wondering how they have been able to pick themselves up and continue. What is it that they have been able to add to their toolbox that perhaps we or young people could learn?

Brene Brown, a wonderful academic, believes there is a trait that sets those who have developed resilience apart from those who haven’t, and it is: they are able to tolerate distress, sit with it, pause their emotional reaction and respond deliberately and purposefully. It is in experiencing moments of discomfort or distress and how one deals with these that has the greatest power in building resilience.

Below are some strategies or steps to assist us in developing the resilience muscle in ourselves, but most importantly, in our young people.

1.Take a mindful pause

When one feels threatened or overwhelmed, our sympathetic nervous system takes over, and the only three unconscious choices we have are to fight, flee, or freeze. Yet instead of reaching to those feelings and responding (for instance, you’re so scared that you’re just going to hide in bed), employ mindfulness or a strategy to slow and calm responses. We often encourage our girls to do this using the following questions:  What do you see? Close your eyes: What do you hear? What can you physically feel and smell?

2. Ask questions

Encourage your daughter to ask questions about what they are feeling and to be specific. Such as, are they feeling overwhelmed. Dig a little deep here. For instance, this could be sadness, anger, frustration, grief? Get as detailed as you can.

3. Get curious

Explore the why. Question why they’re feeling this way. For instance: Does this remind you of something from the past? Is this how you want to be responding? And what could you do differently that would be more ideal?

4: Challenge to think and respond differently

Encourage them to respond differently, to take a different approach. This differs for everyone, but it could be to refrain from social media, take a walk, journal, read, speak to a grandparent. The aim is to provide time for thinking and reflection.

5. Get curious again

Now that the situation has ended, ask more questions. What happened there? Why did you respond the way you did? What did you learn about yourself? Was that a pattern that’s played out previously? How can you learn from this experience? What’s the take-away? What could I do next time? How can I be sure to implement that?

6. Wash, rinse, repeat

Encourage and support your child each time she feels discomfort or experiences adversity to follow the same process as they will find that their resilience muscle will slowly get stronger, and they will have many new skills in their life toolbox.

Have a wonderful week

SECONDARY NEWS

Debating

Ms Kaitlyn Jones | jonesk@mbc.qld.edu.au

A reflection from College Debating Captain, Ashleigh McKeon:

Encouraged by my English teacher, I first joined debating as a Year 9 student hoping to increase my confidence and public speaking skills. Admittedly, the thought of third speaker and short preparation debates terrified me, but after overcoming my (mostly unfounded) fears, the moment the adjudicator announced we had won in my first debate of the season was incredible. One of my greatest debating highlights was making the Queensland Debating Union quarter finals the following year (2019), and since then I’ve assisted in coaching our junior debating teams. It has been fantastic to see so many students develop reasoning, critical thinking and the courage to speak in front of their peers. From the competitive team environment to challenging conventional perspectives on world-wide issues (such as arguing against a ban on all plastics), debating has definitely been one of my favourite co-curricular activities. While I have certainly increased my confidence and developed my communication skills, I have also developed knowledge on global problems, enhanced my teamwork and collaboration skills and created like-minded friends across the local debating community. Being a member of debating is highly rewarding, and the adaptability and critical thinking skills (among others) I have acquired will be vital as I move into university and the work force. I would highly encourage everyone interested to join debating – even as the third speaker – it has been and is an amazing and valuable experience!

The College Debating teams have continued developing their speaking and rebuttal skills in Round 2 of the QDU Secondary Debating Competition. 10.1 and 10.2 worked hard to prepare and compete in their first Short Prep round as well as their second prepared topic while 9.1 secured a win against Iona College. Third Speaker Emiko Kolb was a particular stand out on the night, preparing rebuttal for her team members and reinforcing her team’s case for the Negative. 8.1 also won their debate against Capalaba, delivering a compelling Affirmative Case That We Should Lower the Voting Age. The team’s passion for this particular topic shone through their rebuttal. Hailey McCormick performed impressively, especially as this was her first ever experience of formal debating. Hailey used her voice with flair to create a strong and persuasive tone throughout her delivery.

Public Speaking

Ms Kaitlyn Jones | jonesk@mbc.qld.edu.au

The College Public Speaking team will battle it out this week for the title of Interhouse Public Speaking Champion. The event will help to prepare the Public Speaking team for the upcoming Carter Shield Competition. If you are interested in joining the Public Speaking team, please come to H5 on Thursday B Lunch.

Brisbane Careers and Employment Expo – this Friday and Saturday

The Brisbane Careers & Employment Expo is a leading careers, training and education event in Queensland. The event offers the opportunity for students, job seekers and career changers of all ages to connect with organisations for guidance, clarity and opportunities in relation to career options. Click here for more information about the event: http://www.careersemploymentexpo.com.au/index.html

Getting the most out of an Expo visit

The purpose of a career expo, either online or attending in person, is to give students an opportunity to explore their future options in employment, training and/or higher education. A career expo offers a unique opportunity as it has a broad range of information in the same place at the same time. Also, students can gather hard copy or online brochures as well as get accurate, up-to-date information from representatives who can answer their questions.

To get the most out of a career expo, preparation is key. First, students should have a look at the expo website (most expos have a website) to find out about:

The exhibitors - industries, organisations, universities, colleges, TAFE, employers, etc. who will have a stand at the expo

  • Activities - some expos have activities such as ‘Try-a-Trade’
  • Seminars or workshops
  • Competitions – some expos use these as a draw card for people to attend.

Students should make a list of the exhibitors, activities and seminars/workshops they want to visit and timetable their visit so they can get around to everyone. They should list the information they are looking for and/or the questions they want answered. Most expos have a map of exhibitors (where their stands are located on the expo site). Students should use this to get around the expo and to look at who else is there. After the expo, it's a good idea for them review their information and reflect on how this information might influence their future decision making.

DIRECTOR OF MUSIC

You can only remember what you haven’t already forgotten!

Mr Ben Langford | langfordb@mortonbaycolleges.qld.edu.au

Did you know that in just six days time, you will have forgotten about 75% of anything you learn today (see Image 1)? This scary fact was formulated and tested by German psychologist Hermann Ebbinghaus way back in the 1880s, and re-tested and re-proven as recently as 2015! Unfortunately, it means that weekly music ensemble rehearsals are pretty ineffective… unless supported by students playing their music through at home during the week. The good news is that reviewing your pieces just three times during the week in between your rehearsals results in retention of more than 90% of newly learned music because each time you play the music through you remember more and forget stuff more slowly (see Image 2). Imagine how quickly you could progress, and how much new repertoire your ensembles could learn, if every student in the group was building from a memory base of 90% every week instead of starting by having to relearn two thirds of what was done a week earlier?

This is one of many reasons that students involved in the College’s production of The Wiz have such a busy schedule over the next few weeks. A professional musical is such a complex combination of overtures, acting, costumes, sets, underscoring, singing, dancing, accompaniment and scene changes, often overlapping and interacting, and performed mainly from memory. There is no time for uncertainty or forgetting subtle cues, and so the intensity of our final lead-up to the shows is intentionally designed to help the students really fine-tune and remember all the little details so they can lift their delivery to another level by the time they perform in front of an audience.

If you haven’t bought your tickets yet, I strongly encourage you to do so – The Wiz has a funnily re-written script combined with high-energy dance and all-new funky music. It’s a great update to the much-loved Wizard of Oz movie and the cast and band are really sounding fantastic!

Soirée Concert

Congratulations to all students who performed so beautifully at last week’s concert. For many of our junior boys and girls this was their first ever formal public concert, so it was a little bit scary for many of them, but they did a fantastic job. I would particularly like to congratulate our student comperes – Isabella Berg, Sophie Blackwell, Camilo Suarez, Amelie Eberspaecher and Alex Finch– who spoke so confidently and professionally to introduce the musical items. Thanks must go to our music staff for helping the students prepare, the extra teachers who came along to assist – Ms Motherwell, Ms Meimaris, Mrs Inglis, Mr Burridge, Mrs Curtis, Mrs Woodforth, Ms Ellis, Ms Khafagi, Mrs Venn, Mr Cox, Ms Wallace, Ms Leaver, Mrs McBurnie and Mrs Larkin – as well as our stage and sound crew of Alex Dirie, Ethan Kircher, Lucy Morton, Lily Kunin and Maddie Ryan-Kerr.

Musician of the Week and Captain’s Concert

We were treated to a whole series of excellent musical performances last week. Along with the Soirée concert, six of our younger musicians took the stage on Primary Assembly, and girls from both primary and secondary gave a lunchtime Captain’s Concert. Congratulations to Grace McDowall who did a fantastic job of performing the beautiful and lyrical song Edelwiess, as well as Sophie Blackwell, Amelie Eberspaecher, Isabella Berg, Ashley Tseng and Juliette Stock who accompanied our school song. It was great to see so many accomplished young musicians leading the music on Primary Assembly. In the Captain’s Concert we heard from Denise Wannarat (xylophone), Alison Rohrsheim (voice), Lily Kunin (piano & voice), Erin Plowman & Flo Farrar (vocal duet), Annie Tang (flute), and Emily Holmes & Isabelle Verstegen (Clarinet Duet). Performing solo or in a small grouping is a very different experience from the larger ensembles we heard recently at Classics and Cabaret – there is very high requirement on taking personal responsibility for delivering the musical style and expression of the song and all our performers this week did a great job of entertaining us – well done!

ART, DANCE AND DRAMA

Musical - The Wiz

Ms Kate Fitzgerald | fitzgeraldk@mbc.qld.edu.au

Dear Parents and Caregivers

You are cordially invited to the combined Colleges’ musical The Wiz.

After what has been a challenging year for the Arts sector across all domains, we encourage you all to come and support our wonderfully talented Arts cohort who are excited to be performing to a live audience once again in our very own MBC Music Centre.

Our students and staff have been working tirelessly at rehearsals and this production is set to have you bouncing along to the many fantastic song and dance numbers. The performances are in Week 7 of Term 2 from Thursday the 3rd of June through to Saturday the 5th of June. The Friday night performance will see the promotion of a dress up evening in which audience members are encouraged to come dressed as their favourite Wiz or Wizard of Oz character.

The Performing Arts Support Group, known as the PASG, will be providing deliciously themed “Wiz” snacks in a COVID safe manner for purchase at each of the shows, along with a bar on the Friday and Saturday evening performances.

Bring the family along for a fun-filled afternoon or evening that will see you follow Dorothy on her journey through Oz set to music in a dazzling, lively mixture of rock, gospel and soul!

Get in quick to secure your tickets by clicking on the following link. We look forward to seeing you all there.

Julianne Holland, Yvonne Dorash and Monique Barker | Registered Nurses | nurse@mbc.qld.edu.au

The National Self-Detection Programme for Scoliosis seeks to inform parents and students about important preventative health measures to detect sideways curvature of the spine. This is not an uncommon condition and 2-5 percent of adolescent girls are at risk for the development of a significant curvature.

Please find attached a self-detection brochure which details how girls and parents can check healthy spine development. We would encourage families to access this information, particularly girls in Years 5- 7 as this is the age range when scoliosis can first appears.

The Sacred Choir Reunite in honour of Miss Handley

On Tuesday 11 May, the College community came together to celebrate the life of our beloved Miss Oriel Handley OAM. One of Miss Handley’s lasting legacies at MBC was her love of singing and her commitment to the Sacred Choir. For the 70 years she committed to our College, she ran the Sacred Choir both while working at MBC and after she retired. Led by Laura Desha (MBC class of 1994) and conducted by Janet Sutton (MBC class of 2003) a group of 20 MBC Old Girls came together to sing for the service. We thank these ladies for their contribution to the service. We know Miss Handley would have been proud.
