Mission Australia 2021 Survey affirms the benefits of girls’ schools.

Mrs Janet Stewart | stewartj@mbc.qld.edu.au

Early in February, Mission Australia shared the results of its annual survey of young people aged 15-19. Now in its 19th year, the survey provides a platform for young people to express their views, concerns and hopes for the future. At MBC, we welcome the report each year as it is one of many pieces of data which help inform our pastoral curriculum. After such a challenging 12 months, I was very keen to review this year’s results and was encouraged to learn that girls – especially those educated at all girls’ schools – fared so well during the pandemic year of 2020. In particular, an analysis conducted for the Alliance of Girls’ Schools Australasia, revealed that students at girls’ schools obtained higher scores than the female average in the key areas of physical and mental health, overall life satisfaction, and educational and career aspirations.

While the 2020 Youth Survey revealed that many of the 25,800 young people who participated were happy with their current circumstances and felt optimistic about their futures, this was especially true for the 2,760 students attending 18 girls’ schools. Survey results showed that girls from single-sex schools were less concerned than other young females about mental health issues and coping with stress. Equally positive was the finding that the same girls had managed to remain focussed on their studies and plans to attend university, and were confident in their ability to achieve their goals after leaving school.

Like many other girls’ schools across the nation, MBC worked tirelessly throughout the tumult of 2020 to deliver compassionate and responsive pastoral care and support, and creative online and hybrid models of teaching and learning. Above all, we intentionally set out to nurture the deep sense of social connection and belonging our students feel for their school, to ensure our girls were anchored to their teachers, friends and school community. It seems that despite reimagined school events, cancelled musical and dance performances, new look formals and some concern about the exams results, young women have shown remarkable resilience, resourcefulness, care and good humour — attributes and attitudes that will prepare them for tomorrow’s world, whatever it may hold.

Included in the survey were some very specific questions to measure the physical health of young people. The results in this field indicate that students attending girls’ schools are living healthier lives than the average of all females. In particular, girls attending single-sex schools engage in more sport, and despite the barriers COVID presented, 74% indicated they played sport in 2020 compared to 69% of all females surveyed. This result powerfully reflects the extraordinary lengths that Mrs Pavish, our HPE teachers and coaches went to last year to keep the girls involved in school training (sometimes via Zoom) and sporting competitions, not to mention the creative online and skilfully managed HPE classes and other wellbeing activities, during lockdown.

Similarly, the survey examines mental health concerns in its questionnaire. Here again, the results are better for girls in single sex schools. Just over one-third of respondents from girls’ schools (37%) reported that mental health was a personal concern compared to the female average of 43%. Similarly, 52% of girls from single-sex schools said they were very or extremely concerned about coping with stress compared with 56% of all females. Nonetheless, it is clear that mental health and wellbeing remains an area of considerable concern for all our young people. Thankfully at MBC we encourage open and honest mental health discussions – the video presentation (posted on our Facebook page) from the MBC and MBBC Captains last year was a case in point - and our ongoing focus on mental wellbeing in Primary classes and Secondary PMP ensures we prioritise this among our students.

Interestingly, the Alliance of Girls’ Schools Australasia attributes these lower rates of concern about mental health among girls from single-sex schools as a product of the lower rates of bullying and victimisation that researchers have reported in all-girl schooling environments. The 2020 Youth Survey found that 9.6% of students at girls’ schools were concerned about bullying compared with 15.1% of all females. These findings indicate that students from girls’ schools are less likely to experience the negative wellbeing and mental health outcomes that can result from bullying and victimisation. At MBC, our Anti Bullying Strategy (link to the website strategy please) states clearly that we have a zero tolerance to bullying and we investigate vigorously all matters brought to our attention by girls, staff and parents.

Excitingly, there were positive results from the survey relating to the future hopes and dreams of young women. Girls attending single-sex schools are more likely to enter tertiary education after high school compared with the female average. A significantly higher proportion of girls’ school students taking part in the 2020 Youth Survey reported intending to obtain a university degree (88%) compared with 70% of all females aged 15-19.

In addition, girls from single-sex schools were more likely to report feeling very or extremely confident in their ability to achieve their study or work goals after finishing school (48% vs 45%) and more likely to report feeling positive or very positive about their future (57% vs 53%). Indeed, the overall life satisfaction of girls attending single sex schools was 61%, compared with 54% of all female respondents.

It is reasonable then to conclude that the findings of the 2020 Youth Survey reveal that, even amid the disruptions experienced during last year, girls’ schools are continuing to create an environment where young women can flourish. Indeed, our own experience of 2020 affirmed that girls are active, confident, creative, resilient and adaptable  - the future is in excellent hands.

COLLEGE CHAPLAINS

Green Lights

Chaplain Cherie Meale | mealec@mbc.qld.edu.au

Week 5 marked the official start of the Year 6 leadership roles in the Primary school. This served as an opportunity for me to share with the girls the importance of green lights. As you know, there’s something very satisfying when you’re driving along, and you catch a green light. Green lights mean go, keep moving forward, proceed, advance, carry on. They are there to keep the flow of traffic moving and keep us safe on busy sections of the road, especially when the traffic is moving in many different directions.

But we don’t just find greenlights on the road. In life or at work a greenlight might be when someone tells you that you are on the right track. It’s when your friends support you or when your boss says well done - good job. The sunrise is kind of a greenlight from God for the new day ahead. A greenlight may be the first day of holidays, or even just the weekend. Greenlights can also come disguised as a birthday, a catch up with friends, moving to a new house or starting a new job.

In the book, “When God says Go” written by Elizabeth Laing Thompson, the reader is invited into the stories of men and women in the Bible who were given the green light by God to fulfill His purposes. People like Moses, Rebekah, Abigail, Jeremiah, Mary, and others. These Bible heroes responded a lot like we do when they were presented with a green light. Some were excited and full of hope and others felt fear and uncertainty.

I’m certain the Year 6 girls could relate to those feelings this week as they started their leadership journey. Many of them have already caught the green light and have started to fulfil the role assigned to them, and I have to say, their passion and initiative has been wonderful to see. Others however are travelling into their new role with caution – which is understandable.

Lent is perhaps another perfect example of a green light. It is a time when many of us are called to go forward with helping others, or a time to go deeper—in Bible study or relationships. It can also be a green light to go higher—in prayer and communion with God. Or maybe Lent is the season to go and grow, right where you are. . .to dig into the Word, dive into your heart, and become the kind of person that God is giving you the green light to be.

So, when God gives you the green light, what will you do?

Our Year 6 Student Leaders - Valuing our student voice and contribution

Mrs Rebecca Lennon | lennonr@mbc.qld.edu.au

Our Year 6 Student Leaders - Valuing our student voice and contribution

We proudly inducted our Year 6 leaders this week as they take on their leadership roles. Through our programme we acknowledge the very positive contribution that each individual makes. We reflected on the journey the girls have made throughout their Primary Years, and the responsibility that now exists for them to serve others.

We wish all of our students the very best as they learn and grow this year as they transition the next very important stage of their lives.

Languages spoken at home!

It is widely researched that language learning helps us to understand our own language better and builds greater social and cultural inclusion. Student diversity is often recognised through their own cultural backgrounds and there are many of our families who have rich and interesting family traditions that are valuable to share with us. Many of our families speak a different language at home, and we value opportunities to celebrate this gift in our MBC community.

We would like to invite families to contribute to raising awareness of the importance of ‘mother tongue’ languages. We are open to ideas would love the girls to feel confident to share their language with us in any ways that are appropriate. We have been building a collection in the primary library that has books written in the languages that are spoken by our families. If your family has any books that they would be willing to donate (particularly picture books) it would be wonderful to grow our collection.

Also, if you are wiling to share your cultural heritage or language with us please don’t hesitate to make contact with myself (lennonr@mbc.qld.edu.au) or with class teachers.

Thank you to our Cultural Awareness leaders who assisted with activities to celebrate Chinese New Year.

Library Lovers Week

The week including Valentine’s Day is also Library Lovers Week! We celebrated with craft activities in all Libraries, romantic book quotes competition and fun book dates in the Secondary Library.

Primary Library - Book Clubs

The Years 5 and 6 Rebel Girls Book Clubs have their first meeting this week, and the Year 4 Rebel Girls Book Club next week. This term we have over 35 students participating, which is terrific! The days will change next term, so if students missed out this term due to after school commitments, hopefully they will be able to participate next term.

Book Clubs are a valuable experience through which participants can engage with literature, read outside their comfort zone and connect with peers. A number of quality book stores run their own (paid) Book Clubs as well. If you would like to know more, follow the links below.

Mad Hatters

Riverbend Books

Where the Wild Things Are (West End)

Rebecca Sparrow and Jane Sullivan (ex MBC Teacher) have started an online Book Club for boys and girls aged 10-13- The Rebel Readers Alliance, in which students can participate from home. To investigate further, follow the link. This book club started last week with an introductory video with Rebecca and Jane, however, they assure me they will welcome any new members for the next week.

Primary Library - Year 6 Leadership Programme

As part of the Year 6 Leadership Programme, the Primary Library is host to two leadership groups this year- Library Leaders and STEAM Leaders.

The Library Leaders this year are Fleur McCullough, Emmaline Chong, Emilee Hinz and Lizzie Mauger. They will assist in Library procedures and host special events during lunch times. They will be running a regular activity called What’s On Wednesday where students from Year 1-6 will be invited to enjoy colouring, craft, card games, board games and story-telling.

The STEAM Leaders for this year are Ashley Tseng, Alivia Prasad and Natasia Piyasachaboon. Over the year, the team will aim to provide challenges, activities and events that require students to think differently, design and create while using skills found in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics. Their first challenge is being held this week on Thursday and Friday at lunch time, so stay tuned for the report in the next newsletter!

DEPUTY HEAD OF SECONDARY (STUDENTS)

Sexual Consent

Mrs Michelle McKersey | mckerseym@mbc.qld.edu.au

The topic of sexual consent has featured prominently in the media over the past week, following the sexual assault allegations of a former political adviser and an online petition for consent to be included in the curriculum in early secondary. Many of the respondents to the online petition were from private girls’ schools and provided testimonials about sexual assault they had experienced during their schooling years, some as young as 13.

Providing accurate information about sexual consent has been part of our Positive Minds Programme (PMP) for several years. Our Year 9 students undertake a unit of work called Sex and Sexuality that includes lessons about consent. This is extended upon later, when our Year 11 students explore the issue in the context of Healthy Relationships.

Additionally, since 2019 we have engaged external presenters to speak to our students about sexual consent from legal and ethical perspectives. Most recently, in 2020 we had Michelle Mitchell work with our Year 9 to 11 cohorts and in 2019 author and sexual assault survivor Bri Lee presented to Year 10 to 12 students.

We remain committed to ensuring our students have a deep understanding of sexual consent and related issues such as sexting and image-based abuse, so that they are best placed to protect their sexual health. For this reason, we have engaged Melinda Tankard-Reist to speak to students on May 24 (Term 2) with a presentation to parents to follow on the same evening. More information about this event will be sent to you early next term.

While schools can play a pivotal role in teaching young people about consent, parents have a responsibility to ensure their child understands consent and that they maintain an ongoing dialogue around this important issue. To assist you with this, we recommend the following resources:

  • Michelle Mitchell
  • Youth Law Australia

Semester One Form Captains

We are delighted to announce the Form Captains for Semester One, 2021. A Form Captaincy is a leadership position for which students nominate in Term 1.

Students in Year 8 to 12 are eligible to nominate for Form Captain in Semester one. Two Form Captains per Form Class are selected by the Heads of House and presented with their badges in House Form. The role of Form Captain involves a variety of responsibilities which include working collaboratively with their fellow Form Captain to provide support to the Form Teacher in the practical operation of Form time and House and Form activities. Additionally, Form Captains are expected to assist in fostering positive relationships and teamwork in their vertical Form Class, both within and across year levels.

Form Captains also commit to being exemplary role models to other students in terms of presentation, punctuality and conduct by upholding the College Positive Behaviours Policy and Student e-Device Policy.

Congratulations to the following students from each House: Click Here.

2021 Hearts and Minds Committee

In 2020, the College’s inaugural student wellbeing action team, the Hearts and Minds Committee (HMC), was formed. This initiative was developed in response to data from the 2019 student wellbeing survey and a subsequent recommendation from the University of Adelaide to increase student engagement.

The HMC was involved in numerous initiatives in 2020, which include Fitness Fridays and the addition of shorts and trousers to the uniform. The HMC also led other activities focussed on supporting students and promoting positive wellbeing such as an assembly presentation for RUOK? Day and a lunchtime activity which encouraged students to meaningfully connect with their peers through conversation. Additionally, in acknowledgement of World Mental Health Day, students were invited to contribute to a wall of messages with ideas about what people can do to look after their mental health.

The HMC is an elected group of students from Years 7 - 12 who represent their peers on issues concerning the wellbeing of the MBC student body. Aligning with the Hearts and Minds wellbeing framework, the committee’s role is to foster and promote healthy wellbeing by organising events, projects and developments on behalf of the students, with the ultimate aim of supporting the wellbeing of all Moreton Bay College students.

After an application process where nominees were asked to share their reasons for wanting to have a voice in student wellbeing, the 2021 HMC has been finalised. Meeting for the very first time on Wednesday 24 February, committee members had the opportunity to connect with each other and consider student wellbeing projects for 2021. We congratulate the following students who have been selected as members of the 2021 HMC: Click Here.

SECONDARY NEWS

The Science Experience

Annie Plant, Year 11

At the very end of the holidays, I was lucky enough to be a part of The Science Experience 2021. I have the incredible opportunity to visit the Queensland University of Technology, Griffith University and the University of Queensland to study all things STEM, mostly Science, with PhD students, university lectures and other experts in science, engineering and mathematics. From seeing behind the scenes of some of the most energy efficient buildings in Australia to lectures and workshops with the experts, this experience provided me with some fascinating insight into what a career in STEM could look like.

At QUT, I had the opportunity to work with engineering PhD students and lecturers to learn the basics of building a sturdy bridge. We were then challenged to successfully build a bridge that could hold nothing over 5kg, but more than the other teams in the room. Using flimsy wood, glue and a very stressful half an hour, our team won the competition with 3.5kg, a whole kilogram above the other teams.

At Griffith University we heard from a very interesting lecturer, Dr Tony Greene, from the School of Natural Sciences. With my love for biology, I found the microbiology and new biotechnologies the university is working on fascinating. His lecture included the very relevant topic of how virus’ spread and the ideal conditions they need to survive, while also showing opportunities for the future.

While the experiences at both QUT and Griffith were amazing, the best experience had to be at UQ where I learnt more than any other! And had so much fun! We had the opportunity to hear from Professor Tamara Davis, from the School of Mathematics and Physics, where I found a new love for astrophysics. The unknowns of the universe Davis spoke about were completely fascinating and, while they did make me think about how insignificant the Earth can be in the universe, it made me want to know more and continue to learn about the ‘adventures on the dark side of the universe’, as Davis said it.

Finally, there was a two-day workshop on genetics and lactose intolerance. In the experiment, we extracted, amplified and analysed DNA, then discovered the mystery of how lactose intolerance works, scientifically. This workshop also gave us the opportunity to talk to PhD students, studying genetics, which provided lots of insight into the world of science outside of study.

All in all, The Science Experience was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had! I learnt so much about STEM and have an ever-growing passion for it. This incredible experience wouldn’t have been a possibility for me if it wasn’t the sponsorship of the Wynnum and Manly Rotary Club and I’d like to thank you for providing it to me. I would recommend the incredible experience to anyone in Year 9 or 10 who is interested in any part of STEM, especially science. I loved every second!

Year 11 and 12 Visual Arts in Practice update

Ms Brooke White | whiteb@mbc.qld.edu.au

As part of the curriculum studies for Visual Arts in Practice, Year 11 and 12 students worked with Contemporary Jeweller Jemica Ostrofski, to create upcycled jewellery using scrap metal and a range of specialist techniques and tools. Students designed, textured, shaped, joined and polished several metal components to make wearable art in response to a client brief. These skills will be used to create folios of work for assessment.

ART, DANCE AND DRAMA

Who is your musical inspiration?

Mr Ben Langford | langfordb@moretonbaycolleges.qld.edu.au

In the last newsletter, I spoke about the importance of listening to professional musicians who play your instrument and how this helps you develop your own personal sound and sense of musical style. This week I asked some of our Music Captains who they like to listen to – here’s what they said:

Alex Dirie picked two songs – the first is a really interested modern interpretation by rock singer Annie Lennox of the piece Dido’s Lament from the opera Dido and Aeneas by Henry Purcell. Alex particularly likes the “minimal chordal accompaniment which allows the melody to soar” at the beginning and the “multiple harmonies and echoes that are added to the texture nearer to the end, creating strength and richness in the sound for an almost mysterious effect”. Alex also likes to listen to The Dining Table, by Harry Styles, because she admires his amazing stage presence and confidence and the way he uses simple musical ideas to create an emotional story.

Lucy Morton, who is one of our best violinists, likes to listen to the violin virtuoso Itzhak Perlman because of his incredible technique. Listen to this version of Praeludium und Allegro by Kreisler and you’ll see what she means!

Who do you like to listen to? If you don’t have a favourite musician who plays your instrument, try googling/youtube searching or ask your teacher and see who you can find.

Musician of the Week spotlight

The primary Musician of the Week for Week 4 was Rachel Whyte from Year 5, who performed the traditional song With A Swag On My Shoulder as a flute duet with her teacher Ms Wallace. It can be quite intimidating standing up to play in front of so many people, but it is also a very rewarding experience and I was very impressed this week with the composure and musicianship Rachel displayed on stage. Well done, Rachel!

Congratulations

To all the students from MBC and MBBC who attended Sunday’s Choir Day Camp. All groups made excellent progress in preparation for the Classics Concert, particularly on the Finale that will see the MBBC Secondary Vocal Ensemble, MBC Chorale and College Orchestra combine for a very special performance item. Thanks to Mr Chamberlain, Ms Ellis, Ms Inglis, Mr Connors, Mrs Lynagh and our guest Vocal Point Clinician Dr Debra Shearer-Dirie for working with our students on the day.

DIRECTOR OF SPORT

Code of Behaviour

Mrs Susan Pavish | pavishs@mbc.qld.edu.au

With many sports already underway at both Primary and Secondary level it is timely to remind parents when it comes to sport and our children, we need to know how to be the type of role model who supports our children to enjoy sport and understand what the true meaning of success in sport is.

Sport provides an important opportunity to teach vital life skills. Parents have the opportunity to enhance the experience for their children and to promote these positive lessons. Students participate in sport for their enjoyment and fun. They enjoy the competition, like the social aspect, engage with being part of a team, and enjoy the challenge of setting and attaining their goals.

Now with the relaxing of COVID regulations parents are again able to attend some sporting fixtures. When attending a competition, it is important to remember that there is a Code of Behaviour that covers all coaches, parents and participants. As a parent, it is necessary to stay calm, composed and positive while your child participates in any sport. Officials' decisions do not always go our way and there is a need to be respectful of all decisions made, as well as a need to teach our girls to be respectful also. Please be constructive in your support and it is essential to remove all physical and verbal abuse from sporting activities. The College encourages everyone to appreciate and applaud good sporting performances and skilful play by all participants, show respect for opponents and to encourage players to be fair and consistent and play by the rules. Congratulations should go to all participants on their performances regardless of the outcome of the games. Focus should be on the children’s efforts and performance rather than winning or losing.

Adults hold the key to children’s behaviours. By modelling good sportsmanship and tolerance we can instil in our children the positive values that sport embraces. The “ugly parent or coach” syndrome should not be a facet of their sport experience. Sport should be a celebration of the talent and potential of all participants here at MBC.

SECONDARY NEWS

Secondary Interhouse Swimming Results for 2021

The Secondary Interhouse Swimming Carnival was held at Moreton Bay College on Tuesday 9 February.

All events were eagerly contested, and the swimmers all enjoyed the experience of competing for their House.

The competition was very close throughout the day with the lead constantly changing. As we began the relay events at the end of the day, there was only a few points between first and second.

As in past years, there were very few races that had an empty lane, a reflection of the strong House spirit which was evident throughout the entire day.

The Carnival would not be a success without the help of a large number of people and thanks must go to the staff who acted as officials or supervised Houses throughout the day, and to students who worked tirelessly assisting staff.

The Age Championships proved to be extremely competitive with final results being very close in several age groups:
