Connecting community through Art

Mrs Janet Stewart | stewartj@mbc.qld.edu.au

On Founders’ Day, as we recognise our 120th year, Moreton Bay College will celebrate the ‘founding seed’ of the Visual and Performing Arts. Moreton Bay College currently holds a significant collection of art, which includes art installations, paintings, photographic work, and sculptures. The collection encompasses purchased works, donated works, and student works.

In the 1990s, the Festival on the Bay was a huge community-wide celebration of art, held at MBC, and annually one artwork from the festival was purchased from that event. Later in the early 2000s, the Primary School started to acquire an artwork each year from the College’s annual Art exhibition Greene-ware, named after one of the school’s founding sisters, Anne Greene. The Secondary School soon followed suit and now each year a piece from both the Primary School and Secondary School is selected by the leadership team to be added to the collection.

In 2006 the College hosted an Anne Greene Acquisition Exhibition, featuring the best works in the school’s collection and highlighting the importance of continuing to add to the collection. While the collection has developed organically in the past, in more recent times, the school has actively pursued the purchase of Anne Greene paintings. In 2012, four Anne Greene paintings were acquired and more recently, this year, we have been blessed to be able to purchase three additional Anne Greene artworks from Philip Bacon Galleries.

In 1901 the Greene sisters founded a school on Bay Terrace which prioritised an appreciation of, and engagement with, visual art as central to the holistic development and growth of the young women in their care. In 2021, the College recognises the significance of the land on which the school was founded and in so doing we have forged a relationship, and entered into an exciting project, with two local indigenous artists – Sonja and Leecee Carmichael - both Ngugi women belonging to the Quandamooka people.

Further information on Sonja and Leecee Carmichael can be found here.

The creation of the Tarnanthi will be a collaborative project involving our students, parents, staff and friends of the College. The name (pronounced tar-nan-dee) comes from the language of the Kaurna people, the traditional owners of the Adelaide Plains. It means to come forth or appear – like the sun and the first emergence of light. Creating this together connects us all in a powerful story about Moreton Bay College.

This term, at workshops conducted by Leece and Sonja we will engage with contemporary Quandamooka weaving. Weaving is central to their connectedness to country and draws inspiration form the land and its stories. Participants will create a woven piece which will then become part of a larger body of work – the Tarnanthi. The latter is created from a cyanotype. Cyanotype is an analogue photographic printing process that produces images in a dark blue hue. The process was pioneered by British botanist and photographer Anna Atkins in 1842 to record her botanical specimens and was then used by engineers to create copies of technical drawings, later referred to as blueprints. The cyanotype process requires a mixture of two iron compounds, which is used to coat a heavy paper or fabric. Thus, our woven items, natural objects collected from around the College and artefacts which represent the life and history of the College will be placed on the cyanotype in low light and exposed to UV light. The paper or fabric is then washed in water to create a blueprint which will allow MBC to tell its story.

A video explaining this process can be found here.

The commissioned ‘Tarnanthi’ artwork, by Leecee and Sonya will be revealed during Founders’ Week and hung in the Music Centre foyer, where it will take pride of place. We are excited to acquire the work of Leecee and Sonya Carmichael at this seminal time in the school’s cultural history. We believe it honours the Greene sisters’ legacy, affirms our commitment to our MBC Reconciliation Action Plan and places female and First Nation voices at the heart of our developing art collection. The art of making and creating Tarnanthi together will privilege the importance of visual art in our College life and foster respect for the stories of this land on which our students learn and grow.

With Courage and Hope,

Janet

“May the fourth be with you” and other surprising sayings!

Reverend Peter Lockhart | lockhartp@mbc.qld.edu.au

On Tuesday this week the day that has become known by fans everywhere as Star Wars Day came and went. The greeting on the fourth of May echoes the saying of the Star Wars universe. “May the force be with you!” has become “May the fourth be with you!”

While this day and saying are at one level a just a bit of fun, they reflect how as a culture we adopt and adapt the language and stories that are important to us.

The Bible has been influencing culture for a far longer time and many of our common sayings have their origins in the Bible, despite this connection being lost. Maybe you recognise some these Biblical sayings:

“By the skin of my teeth.” Job 19:20

“A house divided against itself.” Matthew 12:25

“A drop in the bucket.” Isaiah 50:15, 17

“A scapegoat.” Leviticus 16:18

“To cast pearls before swine.” Matthew 7:6

“To everything a season.” Ecclesiastes 3:1

Not only do such saying work their way into our everyday language but they also occur and recur in the literature of our culture, in plays, poetry, novels and films. In this way, Christianity has subtly shaped the culture around us. Sometimes this influence has been positive and sometimes less so. Either way, this knowledge of how sayings and repeated phrase enter our everyday language, or vernacular, can help us to understand who we are and how we are to behave.

On the other hand, there are sayings out there that are assumed to be Biblical which simply are not. The most misunderstood is “God helps those who help themselves.” Not only is this not Biblical, but it also almost completely contradicts the good news of Jesus. In Jesus, God helps those who are unable to help themselves.

We hear repeated sayings all the time, and whether they are of religious origin, or from movies, they influence the way we view the world. I encourage you to think about some of your favourite sayings and find their origins. Maybe, like me, you may be surprised at their origin and the original context!

God be with you all.

HEAD OF PRIMARY

Primary Wellbeing ‘Chillout’ space

Mrs Rebecca Lennon | lennonr@mbc.qld.edu.au

Each year we have a project that is generously supported by the contributions from our Year 6 cohort. At the end of Year 6, families are invited to make a financial contribution to a gift to the College that ensures the students leave a legacy for the Primary School. We consult with staff, parent reps in Year 6 and the SRC Leaders who seek ideas from their peers to make decisions about the gift. As 2020 was such a challenging year for so many, the staff, students, and parents were unanimous in suggesting ideas to enhance wellbeing across the Primary School.

In response to their requests, we have recently opened a wellbeing ‘chillout’ space for the girls. This was an underutilised room near the primary office that has been painted and refurbished using the Year 6 donations. It is a beautifully calm and welcoming space. The SRC and Chapel/Wellbeing Leaders have a voice through collaborative discussions with me to make plans for how the room could ‘look’. The current Year 6 students wanted to tap into the five senses to reflect calm and relaxed feelings. The colours selected were researched and focussed on pastels. There is an opportunity for soft gentle music and low lighting including the ‘necessary’ fairy lights that many young girls enjoy. They have even thought of a diffuser that emits a calming scent through the room which completes the sensory journey if the students need that. A basket of sensory toys is in the room for students to access along with some quit cosy spaces for reading. The Visual Art Leaders are in the process of making a giant canvas for the wall to further reflect the calm environment.

We sincerely thank the parents of Year 6 2020 for their very generous contributions. In addition to the wellbeing room, we will be decorating some bathrooms doors with positive affirmations in the Year 6 bathrooms when we upgrade these over the Christmas holiday break. We are very grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with our community to engage in projects that we do not ordinarily have a chance to action.

Year 6 trip to Cairns

Each year, our Year 6 students eagerly anticipate their interstate trip to Canberra (or most of them do). We carefully considered the current context with the COVID climate and felt it was a significant risk to take the girls across a state border. We believed, due to the fragile situation and at times short term notice with regional or border closures, we were safer to stay in Queensland.

We therefore made the decision re-schedule the trip to visit Cairns. We were able to ensure strong and meaningful links to the Australian Curriculum to create a Camp that provided a combination of adventure team building     experiences, an exploration of indigenous perspectives and engagement with community leadership. The girls also visited Queensland Parliament House the week before their trip.

We could not have asked for a better experience. The students were exemplary with their behaviour and engagement with the trip. In all venues we attended, we received spontaneous comments from the public to compliment the girls on their respectful and mature behaviour. The girls were continually grateful throughout the experience and commented to teachers about how fortunate they are.

So much learning took place and the comments, understandings and reflections on the trip confirmed that a great decision was made to travel to Cairns. When talking to the girls their highlights were the trip to the great Barrier Reef and snorkelling with the beautiful fish and green turtles, seeing crocodiles in the wild on the scenic boat tour, visiting Mossman Gorge and listening to Dreamtime stories along the walk up from respected indigenous elders…and the girls loved the ‘resort’ accommodation.

Feedback from the staff, students and parents suggests that we may make a long term move to Cairns for the Year 6 trip! Sincere thanks to the wonderful staff who were proactively engaged throughout the trip and special thanks to Mrs Jan Craig for her expert re-organisation of the trip.

DEPUTY HEAD OF PRIMARY (TEACHING AND LEARNING / PYP COORDINATOR)

NAPLAN Assessments

Mrs Nicole Bowers | bowersn@mbc.qld.edu.au

Next week from Tuesday 11 May, all students across Australian schools in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 will begin National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) testing. Specific information relating to these assessments in Primary has been emailed to families with girls in Years 3 and 5.

Individual student reports will be sent to families later in the year indicating achievement against national standards. The College encourages and fully supports participation by all students in the NAPLAN assessments. However, we are aware there may be exceptional circumstances around individual student participation. If this is the case for your daughter, please contact Nicole Bowers (Years 3 and 5) to discuss this and to obtain the necessary documentation for completion.

If a student is sick on any one of the testing days, catch-up testing will take place during designated catch-up sessions, within the test window of Tuesday 11 May – Friday 21 May.

MBC LIBRARIES

Primary Library

Term 2 in the Primary Library is going to be a busy one, with many events and meetings to look forward to.

We started with two teams entering the KidsLit Competition last week (see details below). National Simultaneous Storytime is on Wednesday 19 May 2021 at 11.00am. One team of Year 6 students will compete in the Readers’ Cup- 14 June 2021, 4:00 pm for 4:30 pm start at Victoria Point State School (teams to be selected this week).

Our Rebel Girls Book Clubs will continue on the below dates, with more information to be emailed to students and families shortly. The meeting day for each year level has changed this term to accommodate different commitments students may have. Everyone will need to re-enrol, regardless if they attended last term or not.

Year 4 Bookclub

Week 5 - Friday, May 21, 3.00-3.30pm

Week 9 - Friday, June 18, 3.00-3.30pm

Year 5 Bookclub

Week 5 – Wednesday, May 19, 3.00-3.30pm

Week 9 - Wednesday, June 16, 3.00-3.30pm

Year 6 Bookclub

Week 5 - Thursday, May 20, 3.00-3.30pm

Week 9 - Thursday, June 17, 3.00-3.30pm

The Year 6 STEAM Leaders will continue to lead our students in lunchtime STEAM Challenges and activities. The final challenge last term was to design a boat that floats.

Students from Year 1 to Year 6 were invited to design and build, and they could choose to use alfoil, paper or cardboard, and were allowed scissors and sticky tape as tools.

The boat was then tested to see how many marbles it would hold. The students had great success… with some boats holding over 100 marbles!

Kids Lit Quiz Australia Brisbane Heat at MBC

The Kids Lit Quiz Australia Brisbane Heat was held at MBC last Thursday. It was a very successful interschool competition. All our teams competed well, with the Secondary Team 1 coming 2nd overall.

We enjoyed some very special guest quizmasters and once again enjoyed hosting a pop-up bookshop with The Mad Hatters Bookshop, Manly.

DEPUTY HEAD OF SECONDARY (TEACHING AND LEARNING)

NAPLAN

Ms Delia Stecher | stecherd@mbc.qld.edu.au

Next week the Year 7 and 9 students will be engaging in the NAPLAN testing process in the online environment. We ask in Secondary that parents support their student by having positive conversations around the testing process, as well as assisting with organisation of required materials.

Each student will need a set of wired headphones - wireless are not allowed. Wired headphones were listed on the 2021 Booklists, however if required please ensure that these are purchased in readiness for testing. In the past, low-cost headphones from Kmart and the like have been sufficient.

To assist in testing preparation, students will participate in two technology sessions during which the appropriate software will be downloaded to student devices, and students will have opportunity to practice logging into the testing platform, as well as having exposure to question types in the online environment.

If students are concerned that their laptop battery will not last the entire testing session - especially for those with testing scheduled after the lunch break – we will have three classrooms set up as charging stations. B4, B5 and B6 will be available to students to plug in and charge their laptop during the lunch break to ‘top-up’ their battery. Students are responsible for bringing their charger to facilitate this. I encourage that these chargers and devices are labelled with student names. Teachers will be available to assist students with this process.

I look forward to working with the Year 7 and 9 students in the preparation for NAPLAN and on the testing days.

QCAA – Year 11 and 12 Parent Survey Opportunity

The QCAA is conducting a post-cycle review of the new QCE system’s processes and procedures.

Following the initial implementation of the new QCE system in 2019 and 2020, the QCAA is conducting a post-cycle review of its processes and procedures. Current Year 11 and 12 students and their parents/carers are invited to have their say by completing an anonymous online survey by Friday 7 May 2021.

The survey can be accessed at: www.qcaa.qld.edu.au/about/initiativesreviews/post-cycle-review-qce-system .

As a community we encourage families to participate in the survey, as this provides QCAA with a rich and varied supply of data to conduct their review.

DIRECTOR OF MUSIC

Practising for Life

Mr Ben Langford | langfordb@moretonbaycolleges.qld.edu.au

Practising for Life

Many years ago, when I was living in London, I was asked by a friend to play for his wedding and, of course, I was very happy to do so. My friend selected a movement from a trumpet concerto that was particularly famous as it was currently being used as the upbeat theme tune for a well-known TV Soap. Being classical in style, he thought it would be nice to have the solo accompanied by a string quartet, which he could organise quite easily as he told me “my mum takes piano lessons from a friend who also plays violin in a string quartet”. So, I set about practising the chosen piece, which was not overly challenging – except for one difficult four bar phrase about a minute and a half in. As I just began to realise how difficult this one section was going to be, I suggested to my friend that we might want to get together with the quartet to rehearse in advance of the day. That’s when he told me, “It’s ok – my mum’s friend, the piano teacher/string quartet leader - she’s the principal violinist for the English Chamber Orchestra – it’s her professional quartet and they don’t think they need to worry about a rehearsal.” They might have been happy to just turn up on the day and play, but I know I wasn’t!

I spent the majority of the next 3 months working almost exclusively to try and perfect this one small yet complex passage, to the point that as the wedding approached, I realised I had not really worked to master the flow of the overall piece. I had been too stressed about the details and had forgotten the bigger picture. Both these aspects are vital to giving your best performance and I think our student musicians can also frequently fall into a similar trap – either just playing their pieces through over and over, skimming past and never mastering the difficult bits, or alternatively (like I did) fixating on every mistake and never allowing themselves to develop the flow, fluency and confidence needed to give their best performance. I wonder if this is also a useful lesson for other aspects of our life as well?

Perhaps making sure we find a balance that keeps track of both our immediate projects and our long-term goals, and allows us to focus on the bigger picture without neglecting the immediate needs of those directly around us?

In the end, the wedding performance went fairly well (though the string quartet probably played better than I did). If you follow this link, you can hear Wynton Marsalis play the Haydn Trumpet Concerto movement the way it is meant to be!

PRIMARY NEWS

Club Hockey

Verity Griggs, Alexis Watson | Primary Hockey Captains

On Saturday 17 April the U9 Bees won 4 - 3 against South Brisbane Eagles. While this was a creditable performance, the girls showed such amazing sportswomen by not hesitating to help out SBE who were short of players. Felicity, Emily and Miranda subbed in for the opposition in goal keeping and field positions. Miranda even scored for SBE!

The Bees are improving each week. The tackling is getting stronger, and we are getting more confident on the field. No matter what happens they are always smiling and having fun.

Great work girls!

Club Netball

Lily Brook, Emily Robson | Club Netball Captains

Saturday 1 May was the first Saturday of fixtures. MBC has entered four teams in to the MDNA winter season. The teams of very excited girls took to the courts. Although we had a mixed bag of results the girls had some wonderful passages of play in getting the ball down court to their shooters. Space and driving to space is the key and the coaches look forward to seeing the girls improving each week.

SCHOOL ANNOUNCEMENTS

Staff News

It is with sadness that the College has accepted the resignation of Mrs Monique McQueen – Head of Libraries. Mrs McQueen will conclude her time at MBC on Friday 21 May.

Mrs McQueen was appointed as Head of Libraries in 2017. In this leadership role, she has embraced the culture of the College, and has demonstrated her unwavering passion for the academic and pastoral role that a library plays in the life of a school community. In every interaction with staff and students, Mrs McQueen set high expectations and sought to encourage all to reach their full potential - thus she made a most positive impact on the girls and staff in her care. At the beginning and end of a day, girls flock to the library, knowing it as a special place of learning where they will be supported and encouraged by Mrs McQueen and her helpful staff.

The College warmly thanks Mrs McQueen for her four years of service and extends its best wishes for her next professional venture. Mrs McQueen is moving ‘home’ to Sydney to be closer to family and friends and takes up a position at Homebush Boys High School.

Calling all past MBC students and their daughters!

The 2021 The Generations of Moreton Bay Colleges’ Event will be held on Friday 11 June at MBC from 3.00pm for afternoon tea.

This event started in 2019 for all the students at MBC and MBBC that are children or grandchildren of past MBC students.

We want to ensure we don’t miss any families off our official invite list and would appreciate you contacting The Moreton Bay Colleges’ Foundation to ensure you are included on our list if you are a past student of MBC and your daughter or son is now attending The Colleges.

An official invite for this event will be emailed in the coming weeks with other details about a group student photo. Boys will be bused to MBC for this.

We are excited that this community is growing, and we now have over 100 students at MBC and MBBC who are a part of this special group.

Breadth of mind. Depth of heart.
